The everyday style guide
Practical advice on colour, proportion, fabric and fit that helps any wardrobe look more pulled-together, whatever your shape or budget.
Using colour with confidence
- Tonal dressing: different shades of one colour look effortless and elongate the figure.
- Neutral plus one: add a single accent colour to a neutral outfit for impact.
- Repeat a colour: echo a shade from your top in your shoes or bag to tie a look together.
- Faces first: put your most flattering colours near your face, where they count most.

Fit details that make the difference
Shoulders
Jacket and shirt seams should sit at the edge of your shoulder. Shoulders are hard to alter, so prioritise them.
Sleeves
Shirt cuffs should reach the wrist bone; jacket sleeves can be a little shorter so a hint of cuff shows.
Trouser length
Wider legs look best grazing the floor in your usual shoes; slim legs can be cropped at the ankle.
Balance volume
Pair a loose piece with a more fitted one: a roomy knit with straight trousers, a full skirt with a neat top.
Define a point
A tuck, a belt or a cropped layer creates shape and stops outfits looking shapeless.
Use a tailor
Simple alterations such as hemming and taking in a waist make affordable clothes look made for you.
Know your fabrics
| Fabric | Feels and wears | Care tip |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Breathable, easy care, everyday | Wash cool; reshape and air-dry to limit shrinking |
| Linen | Cool and textured; creases naturally | Wash gently; hang while damp |
| Wool | Warm, breathes, resists odours | Air between wears; hand-wash or gentle wool cycle; dry flat |
| Silk | Fluid, light, delicate | Hand-wash cool or dry clean; avoid wringing |
| Denim | Durable, softens with wear | Wash inside out and less often to keep the colour |
| Polyester blends | Crease-resistant, quick-drying | Wash cool; avoid high heat |
Always follow the care label first. These tips are general guidance.
